Staff Bios

Kurtis Kronk - Co-Founder / Editor-in-Chief
Kurtis holds the title of Editor-in-Chief at TheTechLounge. His main responsibilities include editing and publishing reviews/articles, managing advertising and sponsorship opportunities, product photography, and writing reviews and articles of his own. Kurtis is also studying at the University of Texas at San Antonio for a double major of Business and Information Systems. List Articles

Brian Kristensen - Co-Founder / Senior Editor / Webmaster
In addition to managing the company and staff with Kurtis, Brian is responsible for the website and its' backend. When he isn't overseeing the day-to-day operations or writing his own articles, he is researching and planning for the future of TheTechLounge. While titles don't mean much around here, he prefers to walk around with a cigar, calling himself 'El Presidente.' Brian is currently attending the University of Texas at San Antonio as a Computer Science major. List Articles

Beth Anspaugh - Editor
As the only female on staff, Beth holds the position of part-time editor. She graduated cum laude from the University of Denver with a BA in English, although she readily admits that she prefers history and mythology. A Colorado girl through and through, Beth enjoys the mountains where she grew up and loves camping, hiking, and the outdoors in general. She is heavily involved with music and the youth group at her church, and much of her free time is divided up between reading, singing, studying, freelance editing, and spending time with her husband.

Bradford Day - Gadget Editor
When he's not in the lab playing with various deadly bacteria, Brad can be found working on his 1970's BMWs, building random useless objects and fixing the neighbors' computers. He also enjoys playing first person shooters online until the wee hours of the morning under the name TBC Carl Weetabix. Brad is a righteous music snob and enjoys reviewing speakers and other audio equipment as well as gaming devices and pretty much any other geeky gadgets. He has a BS degree in Biology from Truman State. You can visit his blog at www.carlweetabix.co.uk. List Articles

Max Slowik - Hardware Editor
Max is a Colorado resident, working by day as a network/systems administrator for the Catholic Church. During the dark hours he stays out late with friends drinking coffee, catching up on his fragging (as Axman) and drinking coffee, or just wasting time on the Internet... and drinking coffee. Max prefers to get most of his writing done while either on a caffeine high or over pints of stout at the local pub - and he is always ready to recommend a good bottle of whiskey. Eventually he will have a degree in journalism from the Metropolitan State College of Denver, but in the meantime he will have to be happy, uh, writing. List Articles

Anthony Fiti - Staff Writer
Anthony has a BS degree from the University of Nevada - Las Vegas in Computer Engineering. He enjoys writing software, even when he isn't getting paid to do it - his passion is Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and all the web mapping technology that comes along with it. He has been following the computer industry intently for the past 10 years and continues to stay up on the latest developments in the industry. Anthony also enjoys the latest in consumer electronics, when his wallet isn't screaming out in pain. List Articles

Richard Poelling - Staff Writer
Rich loves to review networking equipment (and anything else he can get his hands on) as well as providing technical support in TheTechLounge Forums. He holds a BS degree in Biochemistry from the University of Missouri - Columbia. During the day Richard works for a small biotech company in Charlottesville, Virginia. List Articles

Mark Korff - Staff Writer
Mark can usually be found indoors for the better half of the year as he tries to avoid frostbite in the frozen tundra that is the state of Michigan. As a result of being stuck inside for most of his life, Mark turned to technology for entertainment from an early age. He enjoys a wide range of geek hobbies; basically anything that involves watching, listening, or gaming - he enjoys it all, so long as it doesn't require getting out of his Lazy Boy. As far as credentials are concerned, Mark graduated with a BS in Management Information Systems from Oakland University, and currently works as an IT Auditor at a large regional bank. He spends the majority of his time there experimenting with new ways to get around the corporate firewall so he can play World of Warcraft at the office. List Articles

Nicholas Hart - Staff Writer
Nick comes to us from the Silicon Forest of Oregon. When he's not in front of his computer at work you can usually find him in front of his computer at home playing a mean game of Desert Combat. A wanderer in the computer field, he's worked as a tech support rep for a major ISP, maintained computer labs for the local community college, managed hosted servers for a website and, most recently, running QA on processors and chipsets for Intel. List Articles

Alex Ksiazek - Staff Writer
Throughout high school, Alex's hobby was upgrading his computer. After graduating, he enrolled in the College of Pharmacy at South Dakota State University, largely because it was one of only a few schools that offered both a Pharmacy program and Division I Swimming. After only a year of introductory chemistry classes, he considered making computers more than just a hobby. Shortly thereafter, he transferred to the College of Engineering and declared Computer Science his major. Currently Alex is still a student and employee of SDSU.

Mike McCormick - Staff Writer
Though not as geeky as we were hoping, Mike is the doctor in the house. Mike received his summa cum laude B.S. in chemistry from Michigan Tech, followed by his Ph.D. at the University of Virginia. Though Mike does spend some time playing PC games, he's more likely to be found running, biking, or outright racing in Ironman triathlons. Every now and again he's good for a smartass remark. Want Your Product Reviewed?

If you are interested in having your product reviewed, please send an email to Kurtis at kurtis@thetechlounge.com in which you state the company you represent and the product that you would like reviewed. It is a good idea to include a brief description of the product as well as a link to where more information may be obtained. Emails usually receive a response the same day. Essentially, your request will be either rejected or accepted. If accepted, shipping details and any other necessary information will be given.

It is our policy to keep the products we review unless we have signed a written loan agreement before the product is shipped. There are several reasons we have implemented this policy: 1) Often times we will re-test products at a later date to compare with other products we are reviewing; this is especially common with hardware but applies to all types of products. 2) We have several means by which our readers post comments and ask questions about our reviews and articles. It is quite difficult to offer technical support to our users if we no longer have the product in question. 3) All of TheTechLounge's staff members are unpaid. Our writers put a lot of time and effort into each and every review they write and the only compensation they get for their work is the products.

In the case that we must return a product, the sponsor must pay for all shipping costs. Additionally, TheTechLounge and its' staff are not responsible for products that are shipped without the consent of either Kurtis or Brian.

  • What types of products does TheTechLounge cover?
We cover a wide assortment of products from consumer electronics to computer hardware. We do not cover enterprise-level products.

  • What is the expected turn-around time?
We ordinarily post a review within one month from the date that the product is received by a member of our staff. During this time we will keep you updated as to the progress of the review, and any issues we come across.

  • Can I see the review before it is published?
Yes, but we will not edit a review unless there are grammatical or factual errors.

Rating System

We do not believe in assigning a numerical score to products. While this may make it easier for a reader to evaluate a product, numerical rating systems are often flawed and can be misleading. The problem with numerical rating systems is that they need to be complex to really mean anything. If we were to cover a very specific product or group of products, it would be feasible to create a meaningful numerical rating system, but we cover a very broad range of products so it is not. Imagine rating an MP3 player based on the same criteria as a video card, or a digital camera - it simply wouldn't work. Not to mention the incredible pace at which technology constantly evolves and changes. Such a rating system would have to be changed often, and then older ratings would no longer be comparable with newer ratings. As you can see, there are plenty of potential problems with this sort of a rating system.

Rather than subjectively stamping a numerical score on every product we review, we have an assortment of awards which we may give a product based on specific and universally-applicable criteria. Awards are not given to every product we review; rather they are reserved for those that stand apart from the crowd. Some of the awards we may give out are Editor's Choice, Must Have Hardware, Recommended, and Great Value.
