First Looks
Before I get started here, I would like to mention that the product I received wasn't exactly in retail packaging. I received the Kodak DX6490, and all the goodies that come with it, as a loaner. When I got the package, it was basically in a huge brown box. Everything inside was packed in somewhat sloppily, but that's all immaterial. What matters is that I received everything needed for testing. Also keep in mind that there are some minor scratches and some general wear on most of the products I was sent. Obviously if you buy any of it new, it will not be in the same condition. Enough of that, let's get started.
You will receive all of the following items with your Kodak DX6490 bundle:
- KODAK EASYSHARE DX6490 Zoom Digital Camera
- KODAK EASYSHARE Camera Dock 6000 (US & Canada Only)
- Audio/video cable
- USB cable
- Neck strap
- Lens cap with tether
- KODAK EASYSHARE Li-Ion Rechargeable Battery
- KODAK EASYSHARE Software CD with interactive software tutorial
- Welcome kit and user's guide
- Custom camera insert for KODAK EASYSHARE 6000 Series Camera and Printer Docks
When I first pulled the DX6490 out of the box, I was surprised. For some reason I thought it would be a bit larger. This can probably be attributed to the fact that it looks like an SLR camera, which are usually quite large by comparison. The black and silver exterior looks nice, but I have a feeling that this camera's looks won't be its main selling point. I was surprised, once again, when I turned the camera around and saw the huge LCD screen. Hopefully when I turn it on I'll still be impressed. Also worth noting is that the cameras exterior is made of sturdy plastic.

The camera dock used to transfer images to your computer and the printer dock used to print your photos don't appear to be anything too out-of-the-ordinary, but I will talk more about them later on. Along with the printer dock, Kodak sent me two packs of printer paper and everything else I needed to get started.

Something worth mentioning is that the neck strap that I got was pretty disgusting. After installing it on the camera I decided to wear it around my neck, and boy did I ever regret that. The strap had collected some serious sweat from previous reviewers apparently, and upon closer inspection, it was a bit smelly. This is, of course, irrelevant for you, as a buyer, since you will receive a brand new neck strap. But I thought I would share my little experience anyways.
Since Kodak put out the effort to write some long manuals for the various products they sent me, I decided to give them a quick skimming. I quickly found information that was actually helpful. I definitely recommend reading the manuals before you get started with anything, just to ensure you get the most of the camera.
The custom camera insert that comes with the DX6490 is something you don't really need, but it's very nice to have. Seating the camera properly on the docks is a hassle every time if you don't have the guidance that the custom insert provides. Installing the insert is very simple, but if you need help you may consult the manual.

As you are probably aware by now, the DX6490 has 16MB of internal memory as well as an SD/MMC memory card slot. 16MB won't get you very far, especially since this is a 4 mega-pixel camera, so I would definitely recommend investing in a memory card. What capacity memory card you should get really depends on what you plan to use the camera for, of course! But I wouldn't bother getting any memory card under 128MB. A 256MB or higher card is even better.
Unfortunately, you can NOT purchase any lenses or filters for the DX6490. With 10x optical zoom, this camera doesn't exactly need any extra lenses, but it would be nice to have the option to use filters or wide angle lenses. There is no lens adapter for this camera, and the lens is not threaded, so don't waste your time even thinking about it!

Thanks for the great review. You've answered about any question I could have asked...and did it very well.
FYI: Since your writing, Kodak has come out with a lens adapter and wide angle lens as well as a couple of filters.
