DVD burners have been around for quite some time now. Not quite as long as CD burners of course, but they've been around a while... DVD rewritable drives are becoming less and less expensive, almost as inexpensive as CDrw drives are now. In this review we will be looking at Nu Technologies' new DDW-081, an 8X DVD+RW drive. Nu Technologies is a fairly new company, but their parent company is anything but new. Nu Technologies was founded by Quanta Computer and Quanta Storage Inc. back in May of 2003. The company's focus is on optical storage technology. You may have heard of them if you purchased the first existing 52X combo drive for both internal IDE and external USB, since they were the manufacturer.
Because the DVD rewritable optical drives have dropped in price at such a great rate, many folks including myself already have or are seriously considering purchasing a DVD burner. The prices of the drives have decreased, but the features available have increased. With so many options, it may be hard to choose a brand, or even the media format. You may have noticed a lot of the lower price range burners are single format, or perhaps you don't know the difference between the different formats. I wrote an article recently to give you an idea of the difference between -R/RW and +R/RW, you can find it here.
The DDW-081 is a single format burner, which burns the +R/+RW format. However, if you are a movie buff, don't give up hope, there is a beta firmware in the making that turns this drive into a dual format burner. This will in turn make it much more attractive for the price. This review will be based off the official firmware which is the way the drive is shipped in the box. The firmware allowing for dual format capabilities is still experimental and should only be installed at your discretion. In this review will we be testing Nu-Tech's own 4X DVD+RW disc, as well as Maxell DVD+R 4X (burned at 8X).
