Conclusion

These speakers are definitely some of the best I have had the pleasure of listening to. Granted, I had to tweak my sound card settings a bit to get decent bass, but that's a pretty small task and you only have to do it once. After that adjustment I was truly impressed by the sound quality. I firmly believe that the satellites are better than any other set of speakers I have yet heard. The subwoofer is also very capable of shaking the room and my only complaint is its lack of punch. This shortcoming will have some effect while you listen to music, but for movies and games, these speakers are awesome.

Compared to other speaker sets, the sound quality on Edifier's S5.1s is up there with the best. The subwoofer doesn't have the power or range to compete with the Logitech Z680s or Creative Gigaworks S750s but I believe that the Edifier satellites are better than those of either set. Where the Edifier falls short compared to other high-end sets is the features list. Both the Z680s and S750s are THX certified, have external control pods with headphone jacks, and the Z680s even add coaxial and optical digital inputs. Finding a retailer for the Edifier systems is rather tough, but I was able to find them for $285. This is well under the cost of the Gigaworks S750, but is about $50 more than the Logitech Z680s. That price differential makes the Edifier system hard to recommend over the Z680 system with its more comprehensive feature set. However, if you decide to buy these speakers I am sure you will be pleased with how they perform.

Pros

Separate woofer and tweeter in satellites
Upgradeable to 6.1 channel operation
All-wood construction
Beautifully finished
Remote control allows subwoofer to be placed out of reach
Outstanding satellite sound quality

Cons

No headphone jack
Have to tweak the sound card to get decent bass
Premium price

The only place I was able to find these available in the United States was at SuperStoreElectronics for about $285. Edifier will soon be more in the U.S. market, so check their site for links to local resellers every now and then.

HAHAHAH

I don't live in an apartment so that certainly helps. And then there is the fact that these things dont thump nearly as powerfully as Z680s or Gigaworks subs do. It is funny tho to listen at normal sound volumes and have the wife come in from the kitchen and ask about the thumping sound.

thx for the reply Kurtis. Reading this review, there said that you may put some code with the remote control to "give more power" to the subwoofer.

How do i get this code?
