Introduction

Normally when I review a product, I formulate my opinions within the three to four weeks that I actually have the product for testing. This is not so with the Zalman CNPS7000B-Cu. Nearly all of my friends have this heatsink in their systems and I have already had quite a bit of experience with the Zalman 7000. In addition, I currently have the CNPS7000B-AlCu in my system, which is the same heatsink but with both copper and aluminum fins. While I already have a very good idea of how this heatsink works and how it will perform, I am still taking a bottom-up approach and will present an objective review of this heatsink based on my current findings. With that in mind, let's begin by taking a look at the package and its contents.

First Looks

Zalman calls this style of heatsink the "Flower Heat Sink' and one look at it tells you why; it looks a lot like a flower! This is no girly-mon flower however; it is a big heavy chunk of copper cooling goodness. The heatsink is made by pressing 66 (by my count anyway) stamped copper fins together, bolting them in place between a couple aluminum blocks, and bending the edges outward in a circular shape. What's left in the middle is a roughly square contact patch of copper that's milled flat. Throw a fan on top and you get a contraption that looks rather impressive, especially when you think about the work and design effort that went into creating it. Each fin is even stamped with the Zalman name in case you forget who made it.

The 7000B-Cu is a slightly improved version of the 7000A-Cu. The 7000B not only performs a bit better, but the weight has been reduced by 18 grams. This may not seem like a big difference, but with this heatsink already over Intel's recommended weight limit, it couldn't hurt. I will talk about the weight a little more later on.

The fan used in the Zalman CNPS7000B-Cu measures 92mm in diameter and has a standard 3-pin connector on it. The heatsink also comes with Zalman's "Fan Mate 2' fan speed controller so you can adjust the speed of the unit to achieve your own balance of noise/cooling effectiveness. The Fan Mate unit adds a bit of extra cable mess for you to take care of, but should be small enough to hide easily.
