Performance

In order to test the performance of the Gizmo we used a couple different benchmarking methods on a computer with Windows XP and USB 2.0 support. SiSoftware's Sandra 2005 was used for testing the theoretical performance of the flash drive as well as Simpli Software's HDTach 3. For a more real-world benchmark, we used NoDeSoft's DiskBench 2.4.2.2.

Sandra is designed to test the theoretical performance of a computer's components. The results may not be representative of real-world performance.

While not an exact indication of the drive's real-world performance, the Gizmo is not having a great start.

Simpli Software HDTach 3

HDTach 3 has been completely rewritten for Windows 2000 and XP and will test the sequential read, random access and interface burst speeds of almost any attached storage device. While HDTach's results should be fairly close to real-world usage, it is still a benchmarking program and may not exactly represent actual performance.

HDTach shows results very similar to Sandra. The Gizmo isn't performing even half as well as the SanDisk or the Corsair. Aside from the high random access speed and CPU utilization, the Voyager is kicking some serious Gizmo butt!

NoDeSoft DiskBench 2.4.2.2

DiskBench basically copies a file from point A to point B and records how long it took. For our tests, we had the program copy a 345 MB file from the hard drive to the USB drives and spit out the transfer speeds. Due to the nature of this program, these results should do an extremely good job of representing the actual performance of the drives.

The DiskBench shows performance extremely close to that which we would see in the 'real world.' This test simply copied a file and timed it and Crucial is still lagging behind by a large margin.

wow, that thing seems a bit sucky. surprising from crucial.

maybe they mis-labeled a usb 1.1 drive on accident.

Congratulations on a good review there.
However, there is a very important mistake which I believe you should revise your review in order to correct.

The Win98/SE drivers on Crucial's website are for Gizmo1 usb drives only -- *not* the third revision which you have tested here. According to their own specifications on their website http://www.crucial.com/store/partspecs.asp?imodule...
the USB2 Gizmo is "NOT compatible with 95/98/SE" (verbatim). Those in need of a Win98-compatible usb drive might have serious problems with your review if they purchase a Gizmo, only to find out that it does not work with Win9x operating systems.

Other than this small mistake, I liked your article. May I suggest Iomega's Micro Mini USB drives for a future review?

kind regards,
Giannis, Greece

hindsight is 20/20, but...

it's always a good idea to use a USB drive just as a means of transporting data, you should always have a copy somewhere else.
