Playseat

Playseat had some serious driving sim gear going on. I think I could get used to playing Colin McRae 2005 in this set-up.

Chieftec

Taking a stroll over to the International Gateway building lead us into the land of the little people. No, not Oz, smaller companies trying to get theirs. Well, not all of them were small potatoes. Chieftec was sitting right up front. Good thing too, they pretty much had the best spread of any other booth in this area. They were showing their colors with a row of multi-hued Dragon series cases, a staple of their product line. Also in the booth were some new-to-us cases. In checkerboard print was the Power Ranger series of cases!no, seriously. And sporting lovely industrial gray comes the Extreme series. They do come with more colorful and interchangeable front bezel inserts, let's just hope they change the names.

Qbic

Riding in on Chieftec's coattails were some up and comers. Qbic of Taiwan slides in with some smartly designed small form factor cases. Although their front bezel looks suspiciously like the new MINI Cooper logo. Soltek was fitting their line of motherboards and video cards into the Qbic cases. And boy, do they have a bunch of them.

Coolermaster

We we're expecting big things from Coolermaster. We had heard that they would be whipping out some new stuff at CES. Unfortunately we didn't get quite the reception we had hoped. Coolermaster's booth was a little smaller than we had anticipated. But, they did have a few sleek low profile cases and a multi-gauged unit running Far Cry. There was some contest attached to the Far Cry demo, but I wasn't smart enough to figure it out!I just wanted to frag some stuff.

That wraps up our first day on the showfloor, but make sure to keep an eye out for the rest of our CES 2005 articles.

Ok - here is the oblig. question of the year.... "Does it run Linux". Say it with me... Say it repeatedly to EVERY hardware vendor you encounter. "Does it run Linux". Companies like nVidia and Creative (to name just a few) need to get with the program...

Hey, look out for Kiss technology there. They've got a DVD/80GB HDD/MP3/streaming combo with an Ethernet port, which runs its own markup language, KML. If you own one, you can access the Kiss portal (or one of the other portals you can put in as the firmware is easily hackable) and play games on it etc. You can also access the portal remotely, sign in, look through the TV program schedule, and have your own device back home record a TV show. Has something like 1000 channel schedules in different countries on the portal.

"This is my first year at CES, so I’m officially no longer a consumer electronics virgin. Our second day in Vegas for CES, and our first day on the actual show floor was pretty much what I expected: mountains of new gadgets, people in suits staring at your name tag and scantily clad models trying not to get angry as they are repeatedly photographed.

We started our excursion on opening day in the upper levels of the South Hall. Big name companies like ATI, nVidia, AMD, Logitech, and HP were showcasing anything and everything they could fit into their floor space."

I think I'll take the Ruby on the right.

Tom Arnold fishing! That was some neat pole he was using. The pole must have been a wireless type since the reel didn't have a rod to it. Did the interface of the reel work well with the game? What was the game called anyways? Anyone know?

Brian & Brad, You have came along way this year. Congrats on a job well done. The girls don't do much for me. The next show in L.A. I'll have to petition for somer guy models. Bellagio is a great place to be able to attend any function I find them quite organized. MP3 Players are really big in Calif. We bought 3 for Xmas and will watch for your updates. There is always something better. Good job guys!

What is up with the slanted keyboard on the phantom thing - the mouse looked like it was underneath. That doesnt seem to be a useable setup - could you explain that?

Thanks for this peak in to CES
