I gave the unknown-to-me CMC Electronics Corporation the benefit of the doubt. They have aesthetically pleasing designs for MP3 and multi-media devices. But after playing with their toys, I know now why I hadn't heard of them before. Their construction quality left a little to be desired and I fumbled through the menus like a one armed man in a canoe race.
Olympus
Luckily Olympus stepped in with an MP3 player that I now must have. Their new 5 GB m:robe MP3 player had a hot red backlight, exceptionally well designed and easy to use touch pad inputs and looked great in my pocket. After I was forced by security to return the m:robe, I put the touchpad to the test and it passed with flying colors. I found it far more predictable and less jittery than the Creative Zen Micro and it just looks so damn cool. It sells for the same price as the iPod mini and the Zen Micro, $249.
Oh yeah, and some of you might have heard that Olympus makes cameras too. I know, it shocked me too! The Stylus Verve really drew me in with its odd shape and various color schemes. Plus it's a 4.0 Megapixel camera that fits easily into your jeans pocket. Unfortunately I've heard that the picture quality is not that great. The underwater film camera containers were displayed nicely too. The only thing I didn't love about Olympus' exhibit was the aging rocker playing Led Zeppelin covers on the stage.
