Conclusion
Despite my initial dislike concerning the red and yellow buttons, I was overjoyed with the performance of the R440. While it may not have the true racecar-inspired esthetics of some of its competitors, it performs as well as any other force feedback wheel I have used. And what force! An hour of heavy driving will leave you rubber-armed and asking for more.
The wheel is well constructed and not at all flimsy or cheap, a fact evident in the wrist-breaking force feedback motors hiding inside the wheel. With 4 wheel-mounted buttons and 2 aft paddle-shifters, the wheel sports some nifty features. Coupled with Saitek's Smart Technology software, the R440 is ready to take on any driving sim.
One final feature that some of Saitek's competitors can't touch is the extremely competitive retail price. Listed at $79.95 at Saitek's website, and available even cheaper elsewhere, it sits more than $20 below other comparable feedback wheels. If you are a driving sim junkie, definitely check out the R440. I would whole-heartedly recommend this wheel to any fan of racing games, just hang on tight.
Pros
Excellent force feedback
Precise paddle shifters
Good clamp system
Small footprint
Competitive price point
Cons
Somewhat cheesy-looking buttons
Wheel seems slightly small
Only 180° of rotation

Good review. I have agree completely about the difference a wheel and pedals make in playing a racing sim. It just makes it that much more fun. I have the Logitech NASCAR racing wheel (hey, I found it for $12 at Wallyworld) and though it isn't great, its loads better than using a joypad or the keyboard.

I would like to have a good racing wheel setup but I don't play games enough to warrant one. I played NFSU with a Logitech wheel at CES. Was fun, but I sucked at it :-P

oh by the way... Logitech is sending Brad their MOMO racing wheel, so he's going to be able to compare them now :-)
