Quality Check

I ran the two-year-old test again and was unsurprised to find the keyboard in perfect shape afterwards. Nary a key popped off and each continued to work as normal. I also tried to scratch at the letters with my fingernail but the finish was much too strong and didn't even make a scratch. I didn't get crazy and try a knife or file but if your keyboard gets scratched that way then you deserve it and shouldn't complain.

There is some flex to this keyboard and it gives a little bit of creaking noise along with it but I couldn't find any lasting effects to give me reason to worry about a shortened life span.

Conclusion

Has Saitek truly made the perfect gaming keyboard? Well nothing's perfect but this is certainly the best gaming keyboard available right now. I don't see the Eclipse being sold at all the major outlets just yet, but it would appear to be selling in the $45-$60 range. That's cheaper than other illuminated keyboards and is well worth it if you pack up your gear and attend LANs often, or if you're big on night-time gaming. Not only do you get an excellent keyboard, you get a little bling for your LAN rig that's actually useful too!

Pros

Truly useful keyboard backlighting
Excellent keyboard for typing and gaming
Looks great
Quiet

Cons

Wrist rest is not a very good rest for wrists

Ooo, I like that much better...wonder if I can trade mine in for the new one. :D

edit: Well I emailed Saitek to see if its possible to purchase the etched keys separately to replace the ones on my Gamers keyboard.

Yah, they actually tweaked the brightness on the backlight too and the plastic seal underneath the keys is darkened between the keys to keep glare down.

Too bad they dont have an upgrade program where you can send yours in and get a $20 credit or something. :)

lol, that's why you buy that sort of stuff from best buy, so you can get store credit and exchange later :-P

That is a sweet looking keyboard. Would come in very handy for night gaming. Looks better than those Zippy EL-Keyboards.

Keyboard is great - problems using it with Windows XP Pro as the USB driver doesn't support it but it still seems to work ok with Microsoft's default. Saitek mentions a CD enclosed with the keyboard if you go to their website for a patch that might fix the problems but the instructions refer to using the "CD enclosed with the Keyboard" as the final step - and the patch they have available on-line at their website isn't "Microsoft Compliant" so there were two reasons not to install the update without further confirmation from Saitek that it was good.

Overall, I love the keyboard and will buy another as soon as the USB driver issue has been resolved.
