Styling

Sandisk realized that simple, bold and functional can go a long way with style. Having two bold, solid colors for the body of the MP3 player accented with chrome colored plastic really gives a sharp and stylish look. The circular controller and rectangular display go well together.

First Impressions

Ok, I admit it. I carefully razored open the package before I took any photos of the MP3 player inside it. I couldn't help it, I felt like a 6 year old on Christmas morning with this package at my doorstep. Right from the start, I was impressed by the no frills, no B.S. packaging. I could actually see the MP3 player in the package saying "Free me. Rock with me. You can't resist me." So I did. I skipped right past the instructions, plugged in the included AAA battery, dropped a few songs onto the MP3 player, and before I knew it I was jammin' to "Rhinestone Cowboy" by Glen Campbell. It was that easy.

After a little bit of button pushing, I had an audio recording of myself finagling with the MP3 player, though it was not an audio track that would make Casey Kasem's top 100 hits. Admittedly, I had to go to the instruction manual to figure out how to delete the track. Sandisk's efforts to make an MP3 player that a monkey with Ph. D. could use were 90% successful. At least it was easy to figure out how to make a voice recording.

While reading the quick start instruction guide, I found out how to actually, and purposely, select between the different modes: MP3 player, voice recorder, and FM tuner. I didn't realize initially that this MP3 player had FM capabilities, so it was a pleasant surprise. After selecting this setting, a few button presses automatically scanned and saved 20 radio stations as presets. I was so impressed at this point, that I gave my old MP3 player to my roommate without hesitation.

The article has been updated on 10-30-05 with new information about the replacement sent to Mike by SanDisk after the backlight burnt out on the first.
