Conclusion

The Maxtor OneTouch II performed very well during my testing. Not only does the aluminum casing give it a sleek look, but also helps dissipate the heat and definitely makes for a sturdy enclosure. The drive is also very quiet while in use, even under a heavy load. The backup software provided is adequate and unobtrusive and the DriveLock feature makes a nice addition to an otherwise typical bundle. The ability to 'set it and forget it' with the OneTouch II is a bit nicer than the Seagate's PushButton software, as it works in the background without bothering you. As far as performance is concerned, the OneTouch II is on par with the direct competition, so if you're deciding between the Seagate PushButton Backup and the OneTouch II, you will need to look at the non-performance factors to help you make your decision.

This drive is available in capacities of up to 300GB which should be adequate for most uses. The 200GB dual-connectivity version that I tested retails for about $200 while the 300GB version runs about $250. These prices are average for their respective capacities compared to other drives on the market. My final verdict is that this is an excellent external hard drive with a good software bundle and an aluminum enclosure that makes it that much more attractive.

Pros

Very quiet
Good performance
Nice looking and quality constructed aluminum case
Dual-hookup options

Cons

Heavier than other external drives
