HardOCP Hardware Workshop

When I saw the line for the hardware workshop, I couldn't have been happier to be a member of the Press. Luckily for us, this meant we were able to skip the enormous line. Once we were inside, we waited for a few minutes as the enormous room slowly filled to capacity. Then Kyle came on stage and with the help of some ladies he handed out a TON of shirts - at least six huge boxes of them. I would guess that anyone in the room who wanted a shirt got one (or two).

Since this was our first time attending QuakeCon, we didn't really know what to expect of the workshop. I had just assumed that Kyle would be up there talking for a couple of hours about the industry, tossing out prizes here and there. It turned out that I was quite wrong. There were loads of prizes to be given away, but Kyle didn't really do a lot of talking. Basically, several companies had a representative talk about their company and their latest, or upcoming, products. Some of the more interesting were from Logitech, AGEIA, ATI and AMD. After each rep was through talking, the audience was given an opportunity to ask questions - occasionally Kyle would step in and answer the question for the rep.

LOGITECH

G5 / G7 Laser Mice

You may have heard rumors in the last couple weeks about a new gaming mouse from Logitech sporting 2000 DPI - the direct competition to Razer's new Copperhead. Well, it turns out that there is going to be a corded AND a cordless version - dubbed the G5 and G7 respectively. Both the G5 and G7 sport 2000 DPI, 6.4 megapixels, 500 reports / second, and they've got some new, larger mouse feet which are supposed to reduce friction. The G5 also comes with a removable weight cartridge which lets you customize the mouse weight with up to 36 grams of tuning weights. The G7 comes with 2x18-gram Li-Ion battery packs and a recharger which allows you to quickly swap batteries without interrupting gameplay. The G7 also broadcasts wirelessly on the 2.4 GHz spectrum, fully tested to ensure no interference from almost any household device.

G15 Keyboard with Graphic LCD

There have also been talks of a new keyboard with a built-in LCD from Logitech, and they showed it off at the workshop. Though not exactly innovative, the keyboard does have backlit characters on all keys to help you play in the dark. There are also 18 fully programmable keys for all your macros. The coolest thing about the keyboard is the LCD, though, which is programmable and can interface with your games apparently, as well as display things like CPU usage and network bandwidth. The way they pitched the LCD for the keyboard is as a display meant for showing you non-vital information at a glance - obviously you won't want to look down at your keyboard to check how much ammo or health you have left. There is also a "game switch" which when in the ON position, disables the "Windows" key which would normally take you to the desktop. I'm not sure if it does anything else, but I thought that was interesting.
