Benchmarks - Doom 3

Doom 3 offers the ability to record and play back demos through the in-game console. We recorded a demo in the Delta1 level, mainly in the reactor core area. The demo includes open spaces with catwalks as well as narrow passageways, dark corridors and plenty of baddies for the fraggin'!

The in-game graphical settings were set to "High Quality." Anti-Aliasing and Anisotropic Filtering were controlled through Windows and not from within the game. The recorded demo was played back as a time-demo which runs through the demo as fast as possible and spits out the average FPS. For each test, the time-demo was run three times and the results were averaged.

As expected, ATI gets beaten by NVIDIA across the board in Doom 3. Still, the X1800s perform respectably. The X1600 XT starts to have problems at 1600x1200 when you crank up the image quality, and don't even think about playing with the X1300 Pro at anything beyond 1024x768.

I'd like to mention that with the X1600 XT 256MB I experienced strange artifacts in Doom 3. The plasma rifle was invisible with only the blue gas shown shooting out of what would be the side of the gun, the 6-eyed flying monster was invisible except for his green eyes, and towards the end of the timedemo I shoot a baddie on a platform and he is supposed to fall and go through the disintegration animation as he nearly falls off the edge, but instead he just disappears a second after he dies. These problems went away after I rebooted, but I can't say for sure what the problem was. Something to keep in mind is that I was using beta drivers throughout my testing of ATI's new cards, which could likely be the cause of any strange bugs and/or stability issues.

Hi :) thanks for the review dude :)

I was wandering if you could email me the bioses for these cards?

i was planing on makeing flash mod guides for them :)

for example x1300np to x1300 pro mod and x1800xl to x1800xt mod ect. :)

my email is rswisfamly@cox.net :)

getting the bioses:

try using a bootable dos disk with flashrom.exe on it
http://www.techpowerup.com/bios/bios/flashrom240.z...
also try ati flash
http://www.techpowerup.com/bios/bios/atiflash309.z...

command to enter: atiflash -s 0 .bin

you could also try dumping the bios from ati tool (try the latest beta)

http://www.techpowerup.com

ati tool/settings/misc./dump bios

btw do you have access to the demos for the x1800s? do you think i could get ahold of them? :)

Edit: you could also try winflash for ati :)

it amazes me that with just 16 pipelines they are able to beat the 7800gtx...

the x1800xt does have a higher mem and clock speed though. maybe they can just muscle their way through to higher performance?

This is a good read:

Looks like ATI put a lot of work into the new chip and have plenty of room to grow.
