Introduction

From California -- Lil' John's Thump sunglasses have been combined with Arnold Schwarzenegger's Terminator shades in Oakley's sequel of their original smash hit of MP3 playing eyeware in Thump 2, Revenge of the Thump. The latest version of the Oakley Thump not only sports a sleek new look, but also offers improved storage capacities up to one gigabyte. But if you read my review of the original Thump sunglasses, you may recall that they didn't come cheap and it doesn't look like that has changed. The 256 MB version of the Thump 2 has a MSRP of $299 and the price can climb all the way up to $449 for the full gigabyte of storage. We shall see if the Thump 2 can meet and/or exceed the original or if will it fall short like most sequels.

First Impressions

The packaging was quite familiar, almost identical to the original Oakley Thump. That is a good thing; I liked it then, and I like it now. Secured in the foam innards of the box are the Thump 2 sunglasses, a soft case to protect your shades while not in use, a USB cable to connect thump to your computer (song transfer and recharging purposes), and the standard Oakley propaganda of a quick start guide and the Thump accessories pamphlet.

The first thing that came to mind when I took the Thump 2 glasses out of the package was (do your best Arnold accent) "I'll be back". Not only is the Oakley Thump back, it's back in full force and better than before. It is quite apparent that Oakley made some definite improvements to the previous Thump. The construction felt even sturdier than the previous version. But it wasn't the stronger construction that caught my eye! Oakley has improved on what I found to be the weakest link of their MP3 eyewear, the earbud positioning. The player's controls are the same as version 1 though, as are the same five demo songs that started to play once I depressed the power button.
