Introduction

Way back in the year 2004 Logitech introduced the MX1000, the first real laser mouse. That is to say the first optical input mouse that utilized actual laser technology to map movements. Up until that point LEDs were used as light sources to track user input, even though they were mostly referred to as laser mice.

A year after Logitech actually put the "laser' in "laser mouse,' they are back at it with a new incarnation and this time they're doing their best to appeal to gamers. The Logitech G7 is a wireless laser mouse that can achieve resolutions up to 2000 DPI! Average optical mice achieve only around 400 DPI. A few years ago there was the 2000 DPI Razor Boomslang, but that was a mechanical (ball) mouse.

Obviously, with the laser sensor and new sampling engine I would expect this mouse to be very sensitive to subtle movements. And while Logitech is labeling it as a gaming mouse, I would expect it to fair reasonably well in the graphics arena as well. My main concern is that all the fancy laser DPI mechanics won't be worth squat if the wireless mouse lags during use. I have never been a fan of wireless mice; perhaps Logitech can change my tune.

One critique that has been brought to my attention by a friend of mine is that the G7 doesn't have a gripping surface on the sides of the mouse, unlike the G5. He has told me that the G7 can get a bit sweaty after prolonged gaming sessions...if you are prone to hand sweat.
