Conclusion

Dell has tried to enter the budget market of MP3 players and has come up a bit short. While the Dell DJ Ditty is stylish, the sound quality, ease of use, transfer rate, display, and earbud quality are all lacking. I was most impressed with the size of the unit but I was turned off with the inability to find songs. Out of the box, this player is probably not the best choice for someone looking to exercise while listening to music because of the limited methods of securing the player to your body. However, there are a few accessories including an armband/clip for $24 through Dell's website.

Overall, I found this to be a less-than-average MP3 player and would encourage Dell to step up their product if they decide to stay in the lower-end MP3 market. I would find it difficult to recommend this MP3 player unless you found it at the right price, but seeing as the options are limited to Dell and! Dell, it looks like $99 is the only price. My main concerns are with the difficulty in use, ill fitting earbuds and software requirements.

Pros

Small rectangular size
Comes with lanyard, earphones, USB charger, ripping software
Functions as MP3 player, FM stereo tuner, and data storage

Cons

Average sound quality
Difficult to exercise with
FM reception could be better
Slow transfer rate

I don't think anyone is going to take out the iPod until someone can actually compete with iPod + iTunes. A cool MP3 player alone just isn't going to cut it.

and this dell player sounds more like the cowon ones from 2 or 3 years ago. i'm still using the iaudio4 and it works great AND has a larger colored display.

$99 for 512MB capacity? I can get a 1GB iPod shuffle for that price.

Apples-to-apples comparison here (no pun intended) is that the iPod shuffle at 512MB is $69. Maybe this is just me, but I listen on random anyway so a display isnt all that helpful and the FM tuner certainly isnt worth an extra 30 bucks. Maybe if the Ditty were $10 more than the Shuffle at 512MB I would consider it worth the price, but not $99.

All this is a moot point however as I wouldn't buy any player that only has 512MB of memory. I would definitely stick with flash for size concerns, but I think 2GB is a minimum for me.
