Introduction

When it comes to computer keyboards, things haven't changed much over the past 15 years. We've seen some minor changes like the addition of multimedia controls, the reorganization of rarely used keys, and most recently wireless connectivity. When I first heard about a keyboard with a flip-up LCD, I knew it was something different.

With the introduction of the G15 keyboard Logitech delivered a refreshingly unique product into an otherwise boring market. It"s easy for a company to just push a keyboard onto the market without much effort or thought, but it is immediately clear that is not the road Logitech took with the G15. While Logitech might brand this product as a "Gamer's Keyboard," there are many applications that extend beyond gaming. So while I still remember the wonderful days of key switches and PS/2 ports, today's backlit keys and LCD screens aren't that bad either.

First Looks

The keyboard comes in a slightly longer box than normal, thanks to the 18 "G Keys" located on the left side of the device which makes it wider. The box has a picture of the keyboard of course, as well as a sticker letting the buyer know that the LCD screen is compatible with the game "Brothers In Arms: Earned in Blood."

Once the keyboard is out of the box, you can flip up the LCD panel to reveal the multimedia controls and the LCD screen. Two USB port symbols adorn the top of the keyboard on the left and the right side of the LCD panel. Looking at the back of the keyboard shows the two USB ports in their full glory. The switch to change from regular mode into gaming mode is out of the way of normal keyboard use, to prevent from accidentally switching modes. Inside the box was an instruction pamphlet on how to setup the keyboard along with a CD, containing the all-important drivers needed to get everything out of the G15 experience. Once the keyboard is plugged in and the computer is on, the keys light up a soft blue color.
