Closing Thoughts

After running some initial tests, I'm left with some mixed feelings. I'm a little disappointed that a high-end card would have trouble at 1600x1200 in some games which, while graphics-intensive, aren't the most cutting-edge out there. None of these games employed HDR, for example, which has become popular in some newer titles and is very taxing on graphics hardware. However, with that said, this is also a pretty mainstream "high-end" card, priced at the practically affordable $249 price-point.

For me, what will end up making or breaking this card is the competition. Not only is there the new 7600 GT to consider (which will probably be available today for purchase as opposed to later this month), but I would also like to see how much of a difference in performance there is between the X1800 GTO and the X1800 XL - since the only thing that sets them apart is the number of pipelines (12 on the GTO, 16 on the XL).

Next week I will be receiving a 7900 GT and a 7600 GT from our friends at XFX, so you can bet I'll be comparing them with ATI's hardware. So, in addition to the full review of the X1800 GTO, you can look forward to some reviews of the competition very soon. In my full review I will be adding benchmark scores for 4 additional games (Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, X3: Reunion Demo, F.E.A.R. - First Encounter Assault Recon, Black & White 2), 3DMark06, as well as adding image quality evaluation and overclocking testing. Keep an eye out for the full review of the ATI X1800 GTO (and a slew of other cards as well), coming soon.

We'd like to thank Directron.com for donating the ASUS A8N-SLI Premium Socket 939 Motherboard which we used for testing.
