Splinter Cell Chaos Theory



Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory is a little different than the rest of our benchmarks. The game supports SM 1.1, SM2.0 and SM 3.0. With SM 2.0 and 3.0 you have the choice to enable some new visual effects, perhaps most notably, HDR (High Dynamic Range) lighting. Of course, turning these effects on will greatly impact your performance. Whereas in the past we had to alternate between using SM 2.0 and SM 3.0 for the ATI and NVIDIA cards respectively, we can now run SM3.0 with both companies' cards. As you will see below, we have tested each of the cards with and without all of the extra features available with SM3.0. I will refer to SM 3.0 with the extras turned on as SM 3.0+.

The timedemo we used was the one included with the game, and we used a batch file to run the timedemo three times at each setting. Patch 1.05 was used.

Note: It came to my attention after all the benchmarking had already been completed that I made a mistake in my Splinter Cell Chaos Theory testing. I had chosen to run 4xAA/8xAF at each resolution for part of my testing WITH SM3.0+ (with HDR enabled). Well, it turns out that you can not run Anti-Aliasing while HDR is enabled in this game; not on ATI or NVIDIA hardware. And considering that this game his been out for quite some time now, I wouldn't expect a "Chuck patch" like that seen for Oblivion to crop up suddenly. As such, my results for SM3.0+ tests are only shown with NoAA/NoAF. Had I known about this before I ran all my benchmarks, I would have run my tests with NoAA/16xAF to stress the cards as much as possible in the given circumstances.
