Conclusion

Dell attempts to hit the sweet spot of value and performance with their 1707FP LCD display. With a retail price of $239 (and sale prices often lower) it is an excellent value when it comes to brand name 17" LCD monitors.

The DVD performance was very good. I was able to sit back and enjoy movies in a dark room without problems with display artifacts and ghosting. I did notice a small color variance, due to the 6-bit panel, but it is really only noticeable if you sit a 6-bit panel next to an 8-bit panel. After a bit of use, however, I didn't notice it anymore as I grew used to it. On the other hand, thanks to the 6-bit panel the display has a very fast 8ms response time, so you won't have to worry about ghosting. The viewing angle problem is somewhat disappointing, but given that I'm the only one using the monitor - not using it as the display in a kiosk or having friends over to watch movies on it - it really isn't that big of a deal. The display is also aesthetically pleasing, the stand looks much better, and more futuristic, than the half-circle stand seen on the last generation model.

One thing I should mention is that the display comes with a three year warranty. That is an excellent deal, and given the rate of change in LCD technology, in three years you will probably want to toss (or pass down) this monitor and get a new one that has all the new bells and whistles. Dell also offers what they call Advanced Exchange, which is really just cross shipping. That means if you call in and you have to return your defective monitor, they'll send you a new one immediately as long as you give them your credit card number to hold on to (to make sure you send the defective one back). You send the broken one back in the replacement's box and you're all set!

Overall, I was very pleased with what Dell has delivered. Besides the aforementioned mediocre viewing angle, I would certainly recommend Dell's Ultrasharp 1707FP LCD Monitor to the casual user or space-conscious buyer on a budget. While 17" LCDs might be a bit small for my personal taste, there are plenty of users for whom it would be a perfect fit.

Pros

Inexpensive
Fast LCD response times
Both DVI and VGA inputs
Four-port USB 2.0 hub
Three year warranty with Advanced Exchange

Cons

Stand seems to transfer desk vibrations to the monitor easily
6-bit Color LCD panel (versus 8-bit)

Why would I buy a 17in at $200+ when I could get the 2007FPW 20.1 inch WIDE screen for ~$350??

Because $350 is almost twice as much as $200 perhaps? we recommended it to people on a budget... as in people who don't have more than $200 to spend. :-P

that said, i personally agree with you - i would buy the 20.1" over the 17" any day of the week (and I think Anthony would agree as well). but like i said, some people have a budget, and for them this is a great monitor.

I don't know why you would buy it... it doesn't really matter. As for other consumers...

Not everyone wants or needs a 20" monitor. 17" is plenty of space for the average Joe and $200 is a much better price for those who are on a budget.

I have always been partial to the 1905 FP's myself.

Indeed. Its good for those who really cant or dont care to spend more than $200 on a monitor (my parents, for example).

For myself, a power user, I'd definately stay with monitors 19"+.

Also a good second monitor for dual monitor or another machine.
