First Looks

Everything about the iRiver Clix starts out simple. Even the product packaging is a simple white parcel showcasing only two images of the small player. Four equally stark boxes house the player and various accompanying extras. These boxes contain the Clix player, earbuds, a USB connection cable, screen protector films, user manual and installation disc. The packaging is simple enough to get open although the design more than resembles those from Apple.

The player itself does not resemble many other units on the market. In fact, before you turn it on, the Clix doesn't look like much of anything. No obvious buttons decorate the face of the player and only a few small white buttons line the edges of the Clix: two for volume, a power button and an asterisk-labeled "smart button." A 3.5mm headphone jack, sliding lock switch, and proprietary USB connection port can also be found along the edges. Pressing the diminutive power button brings the dark, glossy face of the device to life.

Once the juice starts to flow the Clix begins to make sense. A menu of choices ranging from Music to Pictures and Video shines brilliantly from the crisp display screen. Four small triangular arrows point to the edges of the player face and serve as directionals to point users to music, video, pictures and other Clix features. Earlier this year at CES '06 I had the opportunity to play with iRiver's U10, the smaller capacity sibling to the Clix. The interface was like nothing I had used before and was thankfully carried over into the Clix product line, but more on that later.

I was immediately impressed with the quality of the video screen. The 2.2" color display covers nearly the entire face of the player and quickly switches between navigation menus. One small feature that I particularly liked was the addition of a clock in the upper left-hand corner of the screen, visible during almost all menus. There is even an alarm clock setting. Of course you have to be wearing your earbuds to hear it, so don't rely on it to wake you up unless you duct tape your headphones to your skull before you go to sleep.

The Clix sounds great - unlike the iriver X20 it has Ultra-bright, 2.2” color display but it doesn't have the mini-SD expansion slot - so, as i don't really want to watch a lot of video on 2.2", i'll be going for the X20 instead
