Lurking in the navigation settings are a number of media related options. No media player made in the 21st century would be complete without video and picture playback, and the Clix has both. It also has a voice recorder and FM receiver. Unfortunately, during the course of my testing, I ran into a few problems with some of these extra features.

First off, I had a few troubles getting the picture viewer to work. The sample pictures that came with the device appeared pixilated and blocky. A reformat and reloading of some new pictures didn't immediately fix the issue. Logically I figured that this was a firmware issue.

I downloaded the firmware update from iRiverAmerica.com and followed the directions but I could never get the firmware to properly update. I tried updating the firmware 3 separate times on two different Windows XP machines and every time I received the same error "The downloaded firmware is not valid," forcing me to cancel the update process at around 40-50% completion.

After a bit more fiddling I was able to get the pictures to work after loading them from my laptop running Windows XP Media Center. When they were displayed, the pictures were clear and vivid. However, depending on the picture I was transferring, I sometimes received an error message saying "the file has properties outside of device limits" and that I should use a conversion program or the files may not be displayed correctly in the user interface. I told the device to transfer the pictures anyway and for the most part the images displayed correctly.

Now, having said all that; I can't fully blame these problems on iRiver as the unit I was sent is a test model and the company can't be held responsible for any abuse that the Clix may have seen before it reached my hands. But the screwy firmware update didn't help much either.

Video playback worked just fine. I obtained a free sample video from iRiver's website and transferred it to the player. For a small screen, the Clix has a very clear image resolution with no shadowing and little pixilation. The Clix will only play .avi files encoded MPEG4 with MP3 audio so don't bother trying to get your DivX rips onto the player.

That said, iRiver does offer a video conversion program on their website to help you get the most out of your player. The iriverter is a Sourceforge openware convertor that should work for a number of other media players as well. Check it out.

The Clix sounds great - unlike the iriver X20 it has Ultra-bright, 2.2” color display but it doesn't have the mini-SD expansion slot - so, as i don't really want to watch a lot of video on 2.2", i'll be going for the X20 instead
