Conclusion

Up until this point, I have reserved judgment on the Clix player. iRiver continues to push the design envelope with their media player product line-up. Sometimes they are right on target while other times they flirt with mediocrity. But with the Clix media player they are dead on. First and foremost this player sounds great! It's about time someone finally designed a player that is not only ingeniously simple in its design, but loaded with features and boasting a lengthy time between recharges as well. If it wasn't for the Windows only compatibility, iRiver might be able to seriously contend for the iPod throne.

I've had a hard time in the past determining why people would want to watch video on a tiny iPod-esque screen. But with the larger 2.2" screen of the Clix, I could see the viewing process at least being a little less annoying, though still not my cup of tea. Videos and pictures are clearly displayed (when working correctly) and other features such as FM radio, voice recording and an alarm clock are just icing on the proverbial cake. I was a little disappointed in the lack of detail contained within the user guide, however.

While I don't like relying on Windows Media Player to create music playlists, having the option of loading my music and media via the simple Windows Explorer file tree is handy. Despite the few troubles I had with picture viewing and firmware upgrading, I still love the Clix. I'm sure some potential buyers will be turned off by the somewhat small 2gb storage size. However, internet buzz suggests that iRiver will be introducing a 4gb version in the near future. Be sure to check out iRiver's e-store as well for deals on Clix combination packages including a player and FM tuner/in-car recharger. I can't wait until CES '07 to visit iRiver's booth and see what they'll have next.

Pros

Great, original design
Top notch music playback
Vivid, crisp 2.2" display
Loaded with extra features
Long battery life

Cons

Firmware update utility a bit screwy
Possible issues with picture playback

The Clix sounds great - unlike the iriver X20 it has Ultra-bright, 2.2” color display but it doesn't have the mini-SD expansion slot - so, as i don't really want to watch a lot of video on 2.2", i'll be going for the X20 instead
