Get Ready!
2007 marks the 40th anniversary for the Consumer Electronics Showcase (CES), the largest technology convention in North America. This will be the 4th consecutive year of TheTechLounge covering CES. It is no coincidence that 2007 also marks TheTechLounge's 4th anniversary. The planets and stars are aligning in preparation for this momentous occasion. Okay, so maybe I cranked up the cheese-factor on that one, but our CES 2007 coverage will kick off an exciting and prosperous year for us, or at least that's the plan.
This year, our coverage will be anything but more of the same. For the past 3 years we have experimented with our CES coverage, and we've learned much and I believe we've come up with a formula for some of the most comprehensive coverage seen anywhere; we hope you will agree.
The first big difference for CES 2007 is that we're doubling the number of people covering it from 3 to 6. In the past, we walked the crowded show floor as a trio and our focus was on getting broad rather than detailed coverage from a variety of vendors. Our coverage this year will be more thorough than ever before; rather than sticking together we will break off into pairs and focus on specific halls. This will allow us to see more booths than ever before, and to spend more time at each booth. If you're wondering who among us will be attending, here's a list so check it twice: Kurtis Kronk, Brian Kristensen, Brad Day, Richard Poelling, Anthony Fiti, and Max Slowik.
In addition to our usual birds-eye coverage, including product announcements and the like, we will also be posting hands-on previews for new and/or exciting products we come across. We'll be calling these "Spotlight" articles and they'll essentially be miniature reviews written from our first-hand experiences on the show floor. Of course, CES gets really hectic, so to make sure we don't forget any important details about any products, we'll each be pouring our thoughts into a voice recorder to guide us in writing later in the day.
Since there are going to be 6 of us and we'll be focusing more on these short Spotlight articles, you can expect plenty of articles each day from our CES coverage. Just to repeat myself, we will still have the broad articles which list our product announcements and a summary of that day's coverage, in case the Spotlight articles don't particularly interest you.
While CES officially runs from January 8 - 11, we will officially begin covering CES on January 6 with some pre-CES, invited-press-only, event coverage. These events include the PEPCOM Digital Experience, CES Unveiled, ShowStoppers, and Lunch@Piero's. These events offer a much more intimate setting than what CES could possibly accommodate with the masses of people walking the show floor, which means better coverage for you, and in the case of Digital Experience and CES Unveiled, earlier coverage.
We will also be attending several receptions and private meetings with several companies including AMD/ATI, Antec, Bang & Olufsen, Dell, iRiver, Panasonic, Pioneer, and Toshiba. And a first for us: we'll finally attend the Bill Gates keynote, so hopefully our old pal Billy Bob will have some interesting things to say. Perhaps he'll even hand out free copies of Windows Vista Ultimate edition, Oprah-style; he's big on charity I hear. But I won't get my hopes up.
Finally, I should mention that our CES 2007 coverage isn't going to end on January 11th, just because that's when CES officially ends. Since we'll have gathered much more information than we could possibly write about each day, you can look forward to more articles for a while after CES ends. In addition, to accommodate the massive amounts of content we'll be posting, we have implemented an altered front page to make it easier to find what you're looking for.
So that about covers what we'll be doing at this year's CES; we hope you're as excited as we are and we encourage you to send us an email and let us know what you think of our new approach and any other feedback.
I'm on a flight right now to New York, NY to visit family and hopefully to take some great photos of my favorite city, so I'll get back to reading for a bit before we land. Happy Holidays and Happy New Year from all of us at TheTechLounge!
