Spotlight: Addlogix Echo View FM PC2TV
None of us had heard of Addlogix, but their rep ambushed us when we weren't really paying attention. Addlogix's Echo View FM PC2TV is a wireless device that allows users to easily transmit video content from their laptops or desktops to a TV. As more and more users watch videos from Youtube, iTunes and other online sources, Addlogix is hoping to simplify the process with their 802.11g wireless receiver.
The PC2TV contains a video processor chip and can act as a wireless access point. As such, setup is simplified and the program software is encoded into the device and loaded automagically via the wireless connection when the device is first installed -- no CD required. The processing chip takes care of compressing and unzipping the transmitted content so that all videos can be broadcast at up to 30 frames/second. And the demo of Youtube videos we saw had no noticeable lag between the loading laptop and displaying LCD TV. The PC2TV connects to your television using either component, composite, DVI or VGA connections. The device boasts stereo 5.1 surround sound although the demo we saw was only 2.1.

When the PC2TV unit is in wireless mode the TV doesn't need to be near an Ethernet connection. Or the device can also be connected to a network using an Ethernet cable should you desire. Once connected, the PC2TV device will show up on your network as a wireless access point almost instantly. Of course any wireless device that is connected to your network has the potential to become a security issue. Our resident security expert, Rich, was quick to point out that the PC2TV press release only mentions WEP encryption support, not WPA. So it is possible that every other device in your network will have to have its security downgraded to allow the device to work properly if you are running a WPA set-up. As of right now we don't know if the PC2TV device's WEP encryption will create a security issue with WPA enabled networks, but we'll hunt down their booth on the CES show floor and find out.
After the quick auto-install you're ready to start streaming internet videos, DVDs or slide shows (or, ahem!downloaded porn, as pointed out by Kurtis, our resident porn expert) to your home television. Anything on your computer screen can be displayed on the TV, so essentially it's like an integrated projector. This could be an effective, low cost alternative to expensive classroom or boardroom digital projectors as well as an entertainment device. And speaking of cost, the PC2TV is slated to ship in Febuary '07 at an MSRP of $199. Keep an eye out for the PC2TV next month. With some luck we'll get our hands on one.
