HD Radio

If you haven't heard about HD Radio, you probably will soon enough. HD Radio is starting to spread throughout the U.S. Representatives from HD Radio were on hand to explain that with HD2 multicasting terrestrial radio stations are able to broadcast several different feeds on sub-channels using the same dial location. For instance, in Brad and Rich's home town, the local NPR station started broadcasting both talk radio and classical music in HD all on the same channel, 88.5 FM. With an HD Radio equipped receiver users can receive CD-like quality broadcasts and informational text read outs. And on January 7th, BMW will announce at the Detroit Auto Show that HD Radio capable receivers will be a factory installed option across their entire line. And the best part is that HD Radio is free once you've installed your HD receiver.

IXT Karaoke Mic

Alright, here's a bandwagon of a gadget, a karaoke machine. Well, it's at least technically interesting because it patches right into your existing cabling; it has RCA connectors and 3.5mm connectors that just toss in its little functions right in over the throughput cables between your DVD player and sound system.

And you can use it to woo yourself with your iPod, sexy.

LG HBS-200 Bluetooth headphones

LG Electronics had a new set of Bluetooth headphones on display. The headphones are Bluetooth 1.2 compliant and fold up into a very compact form factory. The headphones support A2DP, Headset, Hands-free and AVRCP Bluetooth profiles. The AVRCP allows the headphones to provide feedback to the device - to control audio playback and to control volume. The specifications state that the headphones will allow for up to 8 hours of talk time or 6 hours of music playback (most likely due to voice being less intense than music in terms of power consumption) and 250 hours of standby time. Sadly, I wasn't able to listen to anything on the headphones, so I can't judge audio quality, but the styling of the headphones was very impressive. Hopefully the build quality can match.

SpeechGear Translation Software

We didn't get a chance to spend a lot of time with SpeechGear's stuff, mostly because they ran out of press kits and didn't have all their software with them for the unveiling. That doesn't mean we weren't impressed with what we saw.

In almost real-time, the funny little sales rep shot English into his laptop, whose voice hit us with her lucious Spanish. This is some cool software if it doesn't Babelfish its translations. When we tour the real show we're going to spend some time hitting on the laptop's hot voice and see if these guys have a product that's going to make them very, very rich. We've got a couple different languages under our collective belts, so that will help.

TDVision Systems Inc.

TDV claims that their TDVCam can capture true 3D content in high definition (up to 1280x720p). Data is recorded digitally with the TDVCam and can be viewed with their DejaView player or in their Alterspace. Video is encoded/stored in an MPEG compatible format. Of course, the application isn't limited to recorded 3D video, as you can view computer generated content as well.

If the content captured with the TDVCam is played on a standard 2D display, it will only appear as a standard 2D image. However, when used with their DejaView, you will see immersive 3D video. In the short time that we had to demo the technology, we can't really imagine this as a marketable product. While it does have a 3D feel to it thanks to the 2 lenses offering more realistic depth (simulating natural eyesight), the quality of the image leaves something to be desired. Oddly, the image with the DejaView looks like what I can only describe as having "hologram-like' quality, sort of.

With TDVision's technology a wide variety of applications can become 3D-enabled, from entertainment and education to medical and military. TDVision runs on Windowsfi, Linuxfi, Macfi, and Solaris fi and mobile operating systems.
