Spotlight: Nokia N800 Internet Tablet

We got to the Nokia booth a little before the cleaning crews closed down the Digital Experience floor, and the exhausted but friendly crew let us play around with their latest internet tablet. About everything's been improved with the N800, such as a slight processor speed bump up to 330 blazing mhz, better battery life, lighter weight, and a reportedly brighter screen. (The screen still looked a little washed out, but the lights over the show were washing out even the plasma TVs.) The big fix is including real RAM instead of the N770's flash memory, so most, if not all of the sluggishness is dead and gone. Bluetooth has also been upgraded to specification 2.0.

Browsing around, I didn't find any websites that could easily tank it, even garish browser games and other data-heavy pages. Also added is a second flash memory card slot, (SD, MicroSD, MiniSD, MMC, and RS-MMC) and both are compatible with up to two gigabyte media. The attention-getter is still the embedded Linux OS, (not open-source, though) which does have a lot of community support and flexibility.

Unfortunately, it still raises the question: what am I going to do with a portable browser? Yes, it's more than that, and I suppose a majority of the people who want it already know what they're going to use it for. And for (probably) less than $400, it has the one leg up on UMPCs. Ultimately, it's good to see Nokia continuing to work on their unique and somewhat ground-breaking device when so many other great gadgets get left at the curb.

My friend has this, and before had the n700. Awesome little gadget. These can do anything to wireless if you get kismet working.
