Spotlight: Canon 70-200 f/4L IS USM Lens
Canon's 70-200 f/4L IS USM certainly isn't brand spanking new, but it's recent enough to warrant a quick demo at Digital Experience. I personally own a 70-200 f/4L USM (non-IS) lens, so I wanted to see how the new one compared in terms of weight and, more importantly, how effective the IS (Image Stabilization) was. Unfortunately, I didn't have my own 70-200 on hand to directly compare with, but I still was able to get a good feel for the lens in the short time I had to play with it. The first thing I noticed is the IS version is really not as heavy as I had expected. Granted, my camera is a Canon 5D, which is heavy to begin with, so perhaps the difference would be more noticeable on a lighter body. Nevertheless, this was a pleasant surprise for me.   As with their other IS lenses, this one features two IS modes. Mode 1 corrects horizontal and vertical blur. Mode 2 only corrects vertical blur which is useful for panning in motor sports etc. Now for the good part! I mounted the 70-200 f/4L IS USM to test it out on the show floor with slow shutter speeds. Normally with my 70-200 f/4 non-IS lens, I really need to shoot at about 1/100 to avoid camera shake. With IS I was able to get a sharp photos even at 1/15. Extremely impressive, to say the least... That said, the price premium is still a little on the high side right now, but the price should gradually come down a bit as demand subsides.
