NVIDIA SideShow Remotes

On the first day of the pre-CES events, NVIDIA purchased the mobile device semiconductor company PortalPlayer, and at least the CES crew was surprised, because their press info was "re-branded" with masking tape and Sharpied "NVIDIA" and "GoForce" right over PortalPlayer.

For the most part, this means that NVIDIA will now be heavily involved with mobile graphics, in say, cell phones and PDAs. But they were showing some Vista hardware at their booth, not phones.

I can't whether enough has been said about Vista's SideShow widgets or not. SideShow is the remote LCD system that lets you operate any of the Sidebar Gadgets without using the laptop itself; if you've seen any prototype laptops with a small screen on the back of the display that's what I'm talking about. If we set aside the fact that no one really knows how cool Vista's Gadgets are going to be, Widgets and Konfabulator are almost household words; SideShow is set to slip right in.

PortalP-, er, NVIDIA is making handheld SideShow Gadget remotey thingys. Yeah. Oh, just look at the pictures.

Being able to have one or two of these to operate Media Player and read your email on without even using your computer is pretty freaking neat. Not having to use the one built into the back of a laptop is practically...practical. Almost makes me want one without knowing what to do with it.
