Canon HV-10 HDV Camcorder

It shouldn't shock anyone to hear that a company like Canon is making tiny high-definition camcorders. It's not as if HD and minuscule devices are surprising technology any more. It's another thing to hold a 1080p, 24fps (30fps @1080i) camcorder that you're afraid to accidentally inhale.

Equipped with a CMOS sensor right out of a three-megapixel camera the midget makes no bones about image quality either. It records into MiniDV cassettes (DV, HDV formats) and has an SD card slot for taking still photos. It'll even tape for 50 minutes on the standard battery pack, with heavier but higher-capacity (up to two hours' recording) batteries coming down the pipe. It even has telephoto and wide-angle lens kits available.

Probably the most impressive is the sub-$1000 price tag. Still not quite in the stocking stuffer range, but a whole lot less than the semi-professional league of video cameras. Here's a cool feature: Built-in Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) combines gyro- and image-sensors to give image stabilization through a wide range of camera motions. You read that right, optical image stabilization, not the crappy digital type.

Number of Recording Pixels: Approx. 2.96 Megapixels
Tape Recording: DV (normal) mode: Approx 1.55 megapixels (1440 x 1080), HDV (wide) mode: Approx 2.07 megapixels (1920 x 1080)
Audio: DV: 16 bit (2ch) 48 kHz, 12 bit (4ch) 32 kHz, 4ch synchronous recording not possible, HDV: MPEG1 Audio Layer II (2 ch), (4-channel playback of tapes containing 4-channel recordings possible)
Dimensions: 2.2 x 4.1 x 4.2 in
Weight: (not including lens and battery pack): 0.97 lb
