Sound Test

This motherboard has a built in AC'97 codec which supports 6 channel sound. This is much better than other onboard sound chips that only support 2 channels, but it is still a far cry from the latest sound cards such as the Audigy 2. We did a test of the AC'97 sound codec by doing a few basic tasks that involved sound and by playing a few games. When just using Windows and the general sounds associated with it, the sounds were crisp and clear just like with my old SB Live. When listening to all sorts of music, the sound was clear and there were no problems. The highs, lows, and everything in between were all there. The story was a bit different when playing games though. While playing Battlefield 1942, I noticed a significant change in the sound. When there were multiple sounds at once, some of the sounds seemed to drain out while others were fine, and not all sounds would play. When I hit a guy in a Jeep, it should go "thud," right? Not all the time with the onboard sound! This was not as apparent in the 3D Mark '03 Demo, and everything sounded pretty much as it should. The onboard sound is great for normal use, but for gaming, you might want to get a high end sound card.
