Conclusion
This speaker set has a lot going for it. It's really pretty, very well-made -- lots of quality there. The subwoofer is, in all honesty, the best I've seen connected to a computer. With all that pulled off flawlessly, I have no idea what Altec Lansing was thinking when they failed to include a decent set of cones in the satellites.
Much of this is only very noticeable if you play things loud, though, so I think these speakers are fine for an office. And gaming with them is pretty enjoyable, but the audiophile in me can't let go of the fact that they're not good.
As it stands, the onboard mixing hardware stretches the signal to the subwoofer and to the tweeters, making the mid-range muddy at the low end and shrill/overdriven at the high end. This would never have been an issue if Altec Lansing had included a good pair of mid-range cones in the satellites. While I'm complaining, I would have liked to see 8" drivers in the subwoofer, since the sub didn't perform below 50Hz.
I suspect that with the addition of some satellite drivers designed for the mid-range, and the right frequencies delivered to the tweeters and the subwoofer, this set could very well be the definitive 2.1 audio setup. When Altec Lansing puts out an FX4021+, they'll have something phenomenal. Right now, they're all eye-candy no ear-candy.
