Introduction
There was a time when 6-channel surround sound for home theaters was unheard of, let alone for personal computers. But now, even the most basic PCs have the capacity for it. Still, the market for stereo sound is clearly larger than its Dolby counterparts, and the reasons are pretty clear. Not everyone needs positional audio. Most people would rather rock out with a good set of stereo speakers than deal with the hassle of wiring six speakers, and why not? It's not like CDs have more than two channels.
Therefor, the demand for 2.1 speakers such as Altec Lansing's FX4021 is quite high. Available for as little as $100 this speaker set is very appealing to anyone who wants sound to kick a little harder than when it eeks out of their earbuds.
So what do you get from moving up a shelf in the speaker aisle? Good looks, good construction, good sound, or all three?
First Looks
The box contains everything expected. A pair of satellites, one wired and one wireless remote, and the best-looking subwoofer (in my opinion) still suited to an office environment. No wall wart--the power supply is wholly contained inside the subwoofer.

Still inside the box, the speakers are deceptively light. Like so many other things, heavy means expensive. But it's really just that the box uses quite a bit of packing foam, and unlike the small satellites, the subwoofer is very dense.
While a manual is included, the pictorials under the box's lid should leave no installation doubts.
