We'd like to thank Foxconn for providing us with their MCP61SM2MA motherboard for testing purposes on such short notice.

Test Setup

Motherboards

  • ASUS M2A-VM
  • Foxconn MCP61SM2MA

Hardware

  • AMD Athlon X2 5200 2.6GHz dual core AM2 processor (Sponsored by AMD)
  • 2x1Gb Mushkin DDR2-800 RAM (Sponsored by Mushkin)
  • Seagate 750gb SATA Barracuda HDD (Sponsored by Seagate)
  • ATi X1950XT video card
  • Scythe Mine heatsink

OS and Drivers

  • Microsoft Windows XP SP2 (Sponsored by Microsoft)
  • ATi Catalyst 7.2
  • ForceWare 93.71
  • nForce 11.09

All benchmarks have been performed three times, and the results averaged.

General Benchmarks

SiSoft Sandra memory benchmarks

The memory was automatically detected as DDR2-900 with 3-5-7-9 timings on both boards

Here we see the RS690 board pull ahead with nearly 10% greater memory bandwidth.

7-Zip

In a real-world test of number crunching, a folder with 518mb of various sized .wav files was compressed to .7z, with an Ultra compression level using the LZMA compression method, 64MB dictionary, and a word size of 64

Again we see RS690 outperform MCP61 by nearly 10%.

SuperPI

Unfortunately, SuperPI would not, not, not run on this motherboard. Perhaps it's the early nature of the BIOS, the drivers, or both, but it inexplicably failed on all SuperPI runs greater than 32K. The board was otherwise completely stable, and ran two instances of Orthos (Prime95x4) for hours without breaking 45°C on the CPU and 40°C on the chipset.

As soon as some updates are released we will re-test this board and compare it to the MCP61 chipset.

IOMeter

We have created a custom access spec which runs for a 10 minute duration and includes a mix of transfer modes.

The Foxconn board pulls ahead with technically better results using SATA drives, but the difference is so minute as to be indiscernible without a utility.

RightMark 3DSound 2.3

This is a synthetic benchmarking utility that renders audio and measures CPU usage throughout.

The ASUS' HD audio uses slightly more CPU time than Foxconn's, but is still within reason.
