We'd like to thank Foxconn for providing us with their MCP61SM2MA motherboard for testing purposes on such short notice.

Test Setup

Motherboards

  • ASUS M2A-VM
  • Foxconn MCP61SM2MA

Hardware

  • AMD Athlon X2 5200 2.6GHz dual core AM2 processor (Sponsored by AMD)
  • 2x1Gb Mushkin DDR2-800 RAM (Sponsored by Mushkin)
  • Seagate 750gb SATA Barracuda HDD (Sponsored by Seagate)
  • ATi X1950XT video card
  • Scythe Mine heatsink

OS and Drivers

  • Microsoft Windows XP SP2 (Sponsored by Microsoft)
  • ATi Catalyst 7.2
  • ForceWare 93.71
  • nForce 11.09

All benchmarks have been performed three times, and the results averaged.

Graphics Benchmarks

Although neither board is specifically designed with gaming in mind, that hardly means that no gaming will take place on them. All effects were set to their lowest setting, and run at 1024x768 without anisotropic filtering or anti-aliasing.

3DMark06

The de facto standard in synthetic video benchmarking.

Here we see that the X700 core of the X1200, though dated, is still better than the current onboard video champ, beating it by 25%. To boot, with a discrete video card, the AMD chipset does better by over seven percent.

Half-Life 2: Episode 1

Using our own timedemo, we test the deservedly ubiquitous DirectX 9.c Source Engine

Using the onboard video, the RS690 plays HL2, with the graphics on low, almost agreeably. That doesn't sound like much, but it's certainly unheard of. The same chipset also beats out the competition by a few percent.

Prey

Using our own timedemo, we test the ingeniously modified OpenGL Doom3 Engine.

Neither chipset can really deliver the frames in Prey, but the RS690 wins with a discrete graphics card.

Overclocking

No overclocking options were available to us with this board, hopefully because of the early build. I should expect this chipset to deliver overclocking down the road, if only because of how damn cool it runs: even under the worst stress-testing, the chipset stayed under 40°C.
