We'd like to thank Foxconn for providing us with their MCP61SM2MA motherboard for testing purposes on such short notice.
Conclusion
The one glitch, and my personal beef with the layout aside, I have to approve of AMD's first chipset. Not only does it outperform NVIDIA's mATX offerings in almost every category, it has a better feature set.
Does this mean that everyone running an NVIDIA or even Intel chipset under their hoods should run out and pick up one of these as soon as they hit the shelves? Not really. But anyone looking to put together a budget desktop or HTPC needs to keep this, and other RS690 motherboards in mind, as they're certainly the best of the crop as far as mATX goes. Plus, with a price range of $70-90, these boards are priced to put pressure on all the competition.
All said and done, this is a mainstream board, and just one more departure from the enthusiast's court. So, AMD, you're rolling out your X2900s in the next little while, are you going to have a chipset for the gamers, or are we going to stick our cards into a board that rhymes with Locket 775?
Pros
Best performing mATX board yet
Cool and energy efficient, all passive heatsinks
Good onboard graphics with hardware video acceleration
Cons
This specific board has a packed layout
For the budget-conscious, not for enthusiasts
