Test Setup
We use one synthetic test, 3DMark06, and a series of games to test video cards. We try to use our own timedemos whenever possible, but will use the in-game timedemo or record a few minutes of gameplay using FRAPS if that's not an option. The games are Half-Life 2: Episode One, F.E.A.R., The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Company of Heroes, Prey, and Need for Speed: Most Wanted. All benchmarking results are the average of at least three runs of each game at each different setting.
We bench using Windows XP Service Pack 2, and the latest video card drivers (NVIDIA ForceWare 97.92; ATI Catalyst 7.2).
In the video card control panel V-SYNC was disabled and the cards were set to "quality" over "performance." For the ATI cards that means "Texture Preference" and "Mipmap Detail Level" were both set to "High Quality" while anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering were custom for each test. For NVIDIA cards, the "Image Settings" slider was set to "High Quality." V-Sync was disabled for all testing, and everything else was left to the default settings. Default quality levels for AA and AF were used as opposed to Transparency AA and High Quality AF.
This is a performance review and not specifically an image quality article, and the game settings that we've chosen are common ground for both major graphics card manufacturers, as well as being somewhat removed from any settings that could potentially bottleneck the processor or memory while still using worthwhile resolutions.
