Introduction

The Cooler Master CM Media 281 is a home-theater case! or a gaming chassis! or a simple workstation. It converts between all of these, like a real-life Transformer. Only without the laser guns and cool sound effects. There's something about it, though, something familiar.

Yes, it's shiny and black, but looks can be deceiving! the Cooler Master CM Media 281 is not a new animal. I remember when Compaq made this very case. It had some serious beige going for it, but yeah, that's the one. The vacuum-fluorescent display (VFD) was unheard of at the time, but the mid-tower/desktop PC combination case dates back pretty far.

Where Compaq was looking to have one chassis that could be sold to many different customers, Cooler Master is looking to have one customer who could want to have many different chassis. Like the Triple Changers. Man, I loved Transformers.

There are two flavors of the CM Media, the standard variety (CM Media 281), and one with a VFD, multimedia buttons, IR receiver, and Windows Media Center remote (CM Media 280). We have both the standard CM Media 281 and the CM Media 280 here for your reading pleasure.
