Zune Tough-Skin

First Looks

And last we have the Tough-Skin case. This rugged and rubberized shell is different from the other three offerings in that it features a removable screen protector and slips over your Zune like a swimming cap. Even the belt clip is a bit heartier. The included belt clip attaches to your pantaloons with a hinged alligator clip style fitting. A round tab on the back of the case then slides into the clip and locks into position. Depressing a release button frees up the case for menu navigation or syncing.

The rubber case's blocky texture has pre-formed indentions that cover the D-pad and buttons. The removable screen protector is a hard plastic insert with rubber trim. After wrapping the Zune in the rubber case the screen protector is slid into position. Like the Canvas-Sport, there are cut outs for the hold button, headphone jack and connection port.

Testing

The rubber Tough-Skin is my choice for the most sensible buy of the bunch. Right away I was pleased with how easily I could manipulate all the buttons and D-pad through the rubber skin. I had no problems reaching any of the input jacks or hold switch.

I quite liked the way the Tough-Skin wrapped around the player. The Zune is inserted through the screen opening and the skin is pulled taut around the player. The screen protector is then inserted. The rubber trim that surrounds the hard plastic protector has a slight beveling to it which allows for a nice fit and helps lock the panel securely in place.

The belt clip holds the entire set-up securely, but allows the case to swing freely for easier access to screen viewing and menu navigation. Or you can press the release button, jump to the next playlist and snap it back in place. The only drawback I can see with this system is that you may accidentally leave the alligator clip portion of the belt clip on your pants and send it through the washing machine.
