Iometer Benchmarks

For this test, I used a read/write specification which entailed a 2 min test using first a 256K write of a 1 GB file. This is followed by a 2 min 256K read of the same 1GB file. Each test was performed 3 times and averaged. This is also the same test which I use to test NAS devices.

As was apparent in the last test, the 750GB drive outperforms its older counterpart very well. Of course you would expect a newer product to be faster than the old.

DiskBench Benchmarks

This benchmark is closer to a "real world" experience one might see with a drive. The software performs various functions common to most users and essentially times them. These include creating files, reading files, and copying files.

Dual File Creation

This test creates two files of equal size. The settings for the first test were 36 blocks of 20 MB which yielded a final file size of 754974720 bytes.

For some reason the 750 did not perform as well as the older 500 drive. Although they are within a second of each other on the file #2 creation, the File #1 has almost a 2 second spread.

The second test used 50 blocks of 15 MB to yield a final file size of 786432000 bytes.

In this test, the 750 blew the 500 out of the water, and by as much as 8 seconds.

Batch File Create

For this test a series of files are created in ever increasing sizes. I started with a 48 MB file and topped out at a 628 MB file. The file sizes were in increments of 20MB.

For some reason, the drive did not want to settle down when performing this test. These were the averages of three reps, I have added a linear trend line for comparison. The drive appears to perform at least as good if not better than its older counterpart.

I did not perform the copy and read tests through DiskBench since I have apparently misplaced the file used, which was the Windows Vista beta 2 DVD. We will just have to wait for a 750 GB roundup in the future to get a feel for those.

The results on those tests look great for this drive, but how loud is it? Both spin and head movements?

The drive was really no different then the Hitachi 500GB I am running next to it. I could hear it when it was under heavy load, but nothing I would consider excessive in relation to what I have heard from other drives.

Been using one of these for quite awhile now, unfortunately the last 100 GB of the drive act up & click quite a bit, and several slow downs.

I have paired this drive with a "AMS Venus DS3 DS-2316SU2SBK" when I went on vacation, after several torture tests, the enclosure was cooled well enough, so that I could pick up the case afterwards, but of course it was very warm.
