Performance Summary

Our results from Company of Heroes demonstrated the FPS cap for all tests except the XP results of the HD 2900 XT. Therefore, our numerical comparison is being made solely with the results under 60FPS from the 1920x1200 benchmarks.

Tides turn in favor of the HD 2900 XT in a Vista machine: it wins out against the 8800GTS 640MB in every game except Half-Life 2: Episode 1. Often not by much but the numbers are clearly in favor of ATI.

In the face of XP's performance, ATI pulls one off. Not only is their Vista performance better than NVIDIA's, but it's–a fraction of a percent, mind you–better than their own XP performance.

To make it just a little easier to see, I charted up the data.

The HD 2900 XT has the largest gains over XP and the lowest drops. And though the 8800GTS had a lesser FPS drop playing Company of Heroes on Vista., this could very easily be explained by NVIDIA-specific performance tweaking for upcoming Company of Heroes DirectX 10 patches. Even then, ATI's card still netted a better FPS playing Company of Heroes overall.

Just a heads up that you might not know but the HD 2900XT does not actually feature any HD hardware acceleration at all. Check up on http://www.techreport.com for the verified word from ATI themselves. Apparently only the lower end versions have it, much like nVidia's situation.

Yup, we posted news about that, linking to Tech Report as a matter of fact. :)

Thanks for the heads up, in any event. :)

You're right though, I word that awkwardly, and probably shouldn't say in the conclusion that it has hardware Avivo (which what it doesn't have is HD Avivo). On the other hand, it still uses Avivo, and the video playback quality is far and away better than on the 8800GTS 640, specifically SD playback. I can't vouch for HD content because I don't have HD media yet.
