The Card & Bundle

As with most 8800GTXs, this PNY-branded card uses a stock cooler; this is never a problem given the high quality of the heatsink and low noise of the fan. It's labeled with an XLR8 logo, part of PNY's branding. On the side there's another sticker, great for those windowed cases, that labels it as an 8800GTX Overclocked card. Finally, there's one last sticker on the fan marked PNY.

The designs on the stickers are all yellow on black lines, and are a far cry from garish or tasteless. Could be a cyber-pinup, after all!

Even the box it comes in is smaller than other companies' 8800GTXs, telling loads about this being a no-frills-all-business-meaningless-sport-sex package.

It has the standard two SLI power connectors, both of which need plugging in for the card to work, and two SLI connectors, only one of which needs to be used for SLI. At the back of the card there are two dual-link DVI connectors that support HDCP.

It also has the standard 768MB of DDR3, 128 unified shaders, and that NVIDIA new-card smell. The card has a very good stock overclock, with the core running at 621MHz and the memory at 2000MHz.

"Ed: Sort of."

What/why? I am not a computer hardware enthusiast, so I guess I would like a little explanation of the remark. Do you mean that higher clock speed capability isn't a good thing?

Which card would the editor choose and why?

Thanks.

Here's the comment in its full context for reference:

"Taking a look from a few steps back, on the other hand, this card is capable of clocks higher than an 8800 Ultra, and that's something to be proud of. (Ed: Sort of.)"

Basically, the 8800 Ultra is a joke of a card, so I was poking fun at it.

@Kurtis

Thanks for the clarification. I didn't know that the 8800 Ultra was crap.

Thanks again for explaining.

The problem with the 8800 Ultra is that the price / performance ratio is just a little absurd. There is no competitor to the Ultra right now from AMD/ATI but I don't think AMD/ATI is losing any sleep over that fact. :)
