Apple iMac - New & Improved

Apple had an intimate meeting at their Cupertino headquarters today. Expectations were high. Rumors of what was to be unveiled ran rampant in the week prior to the announcement. One thing just about everyone knew was that Apple would update the iMac, especially since it had been almost a year since a major update - September 2006 saw the iMacs from Core Duo (Yonah) to Core 2 Duo (Merom) chips.

The new iMacs are very thin. The entire stand and unit is only about 8" deep for the 24" display. The unit that houses the display and components itself is only about two to three inches thick. The display is thinner on the edges of the unit and thicker in the center where it comes together with the stand. Outside of the changed display, the stand is similar to the previous iMac.

What is different and stands out about this iMac is the black border around the display. We thought this was almost a retro move, invoking thoughts of older displays where the black border around the display was needed for circuitry and other parts. Nowadays that isn't really needed - you can see thin bezel LCD displays everywhere.

There is still a chin on the display; some folks were expecting an appearance similar to the Apple Cinema Displays with all the components behind the LCD. During the keynote, Steve put a lot of emphasis on Apple's aluminum and glass approach. We saw it with the iPhone and now we're going to see it across all of Apple's product lines. It wouldn't surprise me to see a glass and aluminum revamp of the MacBook, possibly a thin MacBook by the end of the year.

The hardware is middle of the road. If you price out the components of the lowest iMac model - 2GHz Core 2 Duo mobile, 1GB of RAM, 250GB HD, ATI Radeon Mobility 2400 XT and a 20" LCD monitor - you get $750, or about 64% of the purchase price. Once you figure in the keyboard and mouse, the operating system and materials for the case, its not too bad of a deal, the difficulty is that you can get a comparable computer from Dell that uses standard desktop parts (CPU, GPU) and its nearly half the price including the monitor. Such is the price to pay for a Mac.
