Ring tones...
First of all, I want to say that the $.99 ring tones are a huge disappointment. Being forced to pay again for something you already purchased reeks of copyright misuse and the continued war on fair use by the content industry. Not having the ability to make your own from your personal MP3 collection is ridiculous. I'm going to assume Apple probably didn't want to go this way to begin with, but the labels forced their hand and told Apple they wouldn't go along with any other way. I hope people figure out how to hack the iTunes software so people can make their own ring tones for free.
iPod shuffle
The only news with the shuffle is more colors, one of which is a special edition PRODUCT(RED) - when you purchase one of these Apple donates a portion of the purchase price to the Global Fund to fight AIDS in Africa. Aside from the charity bit, nothing really exciting. They didn't bump the capacity which is a little disappointing, but I can see how having more than 1 or 2GB of music without a screen would be boring.
iPod nano
The new nano, called the fat nano by some, is pretty interesting, though I can't help but wonder who exactly would want to watch full length movies on that size of a screen. Watching a few TV episodes might work, but I'd hate to watch Lord of the Rings: Return of the King on that small screen. It may be 320x240 (which is the same as the resolution of the iPod Classic), but it's small in terms of diagonal viewing area (2" for the new nano vs 2.5" on the iPod Classic). Eyestrain ahoy!
The new UI is interesting, as Apple introduces coverflow and better aesthetics to the user experience. Apple left many of the other specifications alone, 24 hours of audio is the same as the last nano, and 5 hours of video should get you through that cross country flight (usually). The 8GB version of the new nano, priced at $199, will probably be the biggest seller this holiday season. The 4GB version, at $149, isn't too bad either.
iPod classic
The introduction of the iPod classic wasn't entirely unexpected by me, as I thought the price of a new iPod touch would leave a huge gap between it and the nano. The increased capacity is nice, and 30-40 hours of battery life for audio and 6-7 hours for video is pretty impressive. The classic also gets the new UI, including coverflow. The baseline model is 80GB and the slightly larger one is 160GB. 160GB in your pocket is pretty impressive. Prices remain the same at $250 and $350 for the two models, respectively.
