Plug-ins

Microsoft added a plug-in API for third parties and VARs to allow them to build simple applications that sit inside WHS and interact with the server. What is unique about this approach is that not only is the API available to its best partners, but to everyone. All you need is Visual Studio 2005 and the free API. I haven't tried to develop a plug-in myself (even though I write software for a living and do know C# fairly well) but it seems like a great way for hobbyists to get into the game and make the plug-ins they'd like to see.

Microsoft held a contest called "Code2Fame" to allow regular programmers, not necessarily just MS's best partners and developers, to build plug-ins for WHS. Microsoft awarded $10,000 to winner Andrew Grant from California for his Whiist plug-in that allows users to share web pages, photos, and more with family and friends.

We're also starting to see plug-ins from big names. Avast, maker of the Avast family of Anti-Virus products, is making a WHS plug-in that will keep track of all the computers in the household's anti-virus status (like application version, virus definition, etc). And the "home administrator" can check the PCs and get warnings when virus definitions are out-of-date.

We're likely to see more and more plug-ins by the end of the year as OEMs like HP start to ramp up the production of WHS computers.
