Introduction

Geeks are notoriously hard to shop for, and it's an ill-deserved notoriety. Yes, it's true that most people who fall under the geek purview spend their time talking about specific, and ridiculously expensive things that they're more comfortable buying themselves (myself excluded, see, I'm cool, I just used to be nerdy) but come on, they still like getting stuff.

And since it's getting close to that time of year where we all like giving stuff away, lest the invisible giant who lives in the sky smite us for being selfish, the pressure's on for finding the right stocking-stuffer. It's really not hard. You just have to know where to "shop"--all this from the comfort of your very own work computer, even.

Universally Cool Gifts

Gotta get the big three out of the way. Everybody always wants the following in gift-wrap:

  • Digital cameras
  • Laptops
  • High-definition televisions

If you're flush, these make all shapes and sizes happy.

Gift Certificates

The best substitute for monetary gifts, gift certificates let you decide where, at least, sort of, the recipient will spend their gift's worth. There are better stores than others.

Amazon and Apple and Dell are other good places to shop, and both offer gift certificates. If your technophile owns an iPod, you know that Apple is a safe bet, no matter what the amount. Dell carries so much hardware, from your expected desktops and laptops, to software (including games) and digital cameras, printers, and, well, stuff that's nice to own.

If your beloved is a sucker for anything Japanese, there's J-List, the best place to get freshly-imported candy, media, and, er... lubricants straight from Japan. Don't shop around at work, though. Your administrator will want to talk to you. (Probably about cool Japanese stuff, but still.)

Think Geek also has gift certificates, but carry so many varied products from fun gadgets to ridiculous, indecipherable tech accessories. If you fall in love with the notion of giving someone the gift of Think Geek, you might want to pick something out for them yourself, forgoing the sub-creative certificate altogether.

Editor's Note: I'd like to add a couple of other great stores to consider if you're shopping for a photography enthusiast or audiophile: B&H Photo Video and Crutchfield, respectively. B&H Photo Video has arguably the best selection of photo equipment, from accessories to point-n-shoots to professional DSLRs - they also sell computers, home theater goodies, and more... This is where I spend [way too much of] my money. Crutchfield has an outstanding selection of home audio / video and car audio equipment, plus GPS devices and cameras. You can find lower prices than Crutchfield's, but they have amazing customer service, and for that reason I use them for my car audio / home audio needs (well, wants...). I've made the mistake of buying speakers from eBay - never again. With either of these stores, the lucky recipient will get a lot better selection, and, almost always, much better prices, than with a brick & mortar shop such as Best Buy or Circuit City.

There are so many online shops with gift certificates that asking your geek about where they shop for their hobbies really will yield results.
