Pictures, Music and Video

The camera is a two megapixel camera, with four different resolutions to choose from (320x240 up to 1600x1200). The camera has several configurable options like white balance and auto-focus. It includes a self-timer and some cheesy color effects.

There are two ways to get the pictures from the phone to a computer, the first is to move them to the memory card, then remove the card and put it in the computer. Alternately, you can use Bluetooth to copy the files off the phone to your PC. I was even able to pull pictures and video off the phone and onto my MacBook via Bluetooth.

Loading music onto the phone (rather, the memory card in the phone) requires Verizon's V-Cast Music Manager software (Windows only). You simply add your music to the application, and then add that music to the sync list. The software isn't that well designed from a music organization perspective as it only offers two views: a list of every song you have (whether it be 100, 1,000 or 10,000 songs) or an album view. Another problem with the software is that it's very easy to copy the same songs over to the phone twice, duplicating the song and wasting valuable space. The interface reminds me of iTunes, and I didn't like that interface when I first used it either, so I'm willing to cut it some slack and give it more than just two weeks of usage before I make a judgment call.

Verizon's V-Cast Mobile TV is the brightest spot of the review. The package is expensive - $13-25/mo depending on what level of service you get. $15/mo gives you 8 channels: Fox Mobile, CBS Mobile, Comedy Central, MTV, NBC, Nickelodeon, NBC News and ESPN. The service allows you to watch live television (with some possible alterations, as I mention below) on your phone. The TV channels are transmitted over the data network and the phone has the radio and antenna to pick up and decode the transmissions.

The video quality was surprisingly good. I was watching ESPN and not only was the transmission coming in well (not many noticeable hiccups), the high resolution of the screen allows me to read ESPN's Bottom Line, so I can keep up on scores and sports news. Some onscreen graphics were still too small (like the play clock during football) but overall I was surprised with how good the experience was. The only feature it's missing is the ability to rewind up to 30 seconds.

However, as I watched more and more I realized that not all of the content that is on ESPN is on the VCast version. During the halftime of the Holiday Bowl, the V-Cast version of ESPN was just ads for ESPN and the occasional Nike ad, while on the real ESPN they had the normal halftime show. On the plus side though, I didn't have to watch a single enlarged prostate medication commercial.

It is possible to playback prerecorded videos you have on your PC, however the file formats that the phone supports are very limited. The test file I used was an MPEG 4 formatted file with AAC audio, 320x240 resolution and 15fps and played back just fine.

Although the screen is 400 pixels wide, the phone can only support 320 pixel wide movies, leaving 20% of the screen for the movie controls. This is unfortunate because the ability to use the full 400x240 aspect ratio would be great for watching movies.

OK, the phone is probably great, but AMAZON is not! They do not have this phone, it is in some kind of backorder limbo and from what I can tell - if it was ordered after Dec. 4th 2007, nobody even got one.
