Conclusion

In a world...

...where motherboards have sequels...

I like this motherboard for a lot of reasons, but outstanding performance isn't one of them. It was a surprise to me that Asus' own G965 outperformed this brand-new board in every application test. I re-benched both to be certain. I console myself with the knowledge that the margin between the two isn't particularly noticeable, and, while playing games, the P5K-E WiFi-AP came out a single hair ahead. I'm not going to say it's all chipset business, as there are plenty of reports around that put the P35 ahead of the i965 chipsets; there's always the chance that the P5B-VM is well above-average, but from this pairing I'd say they're on equal footing.

The standard advantages of a more recent chipset apply: better driver and processor support, newer, longer warrantee coverage, and potential BIOS improvements down the road. As far as who can best use this board, I'd recommend it to someone who's building a new machine, but not someone planning to swap out an i965.

But everything else is commendable! The layout is as fine as it gets, the bundle is light but elegant, and the overclocking is probably the best in the mainstream range. And it's priced to go. This is a solid buy and not a difficult decision.

Pros

Great value
Feature-heavy
CrossFire, if you're into that sort of thing
Unobtrusive passive cooling
Excellent layout
Overclocks like...I dunno, a watch in space. Like a space watch.

Cons

Not shabby, not great performance
Aluminum heatsinks painted to look copper
