Video, Power, and Overclocking

HQV

Chaintech's card isn't perfect for playing back videos. The noise reduction is a little on the weak side, and there are halos around moving objects. You might not notice either unless you have a keen eye or way too big of a display.

Power and Noise

For once, NVIDIA wins one for power. Although not super-efficient at idle, it barely even needs the auxiliary power under load, unless you overclock--it just comes a little too close to 75W total.

But this is not all porn and Skittles. When the card's not doing anything, you won't hear a peep. When it's moving pixels, though, something weird happens. And it's not that the fan picks up...which it does, but it's not an angry fan sound and is still less noisy than the coils. They whine. If you're sensitive to high-frequency electronic sounds, stay far away from this card. It's not limited to this 9600 GT, either; it's just that the power hardware is stressed by overclocking, and it whistles a little atonal medley.

Overclocking

So, since it's going to whistle anyway, you may as well really push the overclocking. I got a pretty effortless ~6% overclock over the factory ~8% overclock. A fifteen percent improvement's hardly a joke.
